Help & FAQ
Straight answers about how Merji works today.
Cost and accounts
Is Merji really free? Is there a catch?
Yes. Every tool on the site is free, with no daily limit, no watermark added to your files and no ads. The work happens on your own device, so there is no server bill that grows with each file, which is what lets the tools stay free.
Do I need an account? What does signing in do?
No. There is no sign-in on Merji today, so there is nothing to sign up for and no account to delete. If paid extras are added later they will need an account; the tools here will not.
Your files and privacy
Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
No. Your file is opened, changed and saved by your own browser, on your own device. It is never sent to Merji or to anyone else. The site also tells your browser to block requests to any other website, so a file can't leak by accident. How we keep files private has the detail.
Is it safe for Aadhaar, PAN and bank statements?
These are the documents Merji was built for, because they never leave your device. Before you share a copy, Mask Aadhaar & PAN can hide the ID numbers. One caution that applies to any tool: check the masked file yourself before you send it.
What happens to my file when I close the page?
It is gone from Merji. Files are held in your browser's memory only while the page is open, and the result is saved wherever you choose to download it. A few small things are remembered in this browser on this device so you don't have to repeat them: your theme, recent commands, saved recipes, and the details you type into the form filler's profile. None of it is sent anywhere, and clearing your browser's site data removes it.
How can I check that nothing is uploaded?
Three ways. The counter on the homepage shows the bytes uploaded since you opened the page, measured live. Each tool shows what it sent while it worked. And you can turn your internet off and use a tool anyway. Check it yourself walks through a stricter test using your browser's own network panel.
Working offline and installing
How can it work offline?
The first time you visit, your browser saves Merji's pages and tools on your device. Wait for “Ready to work offline on this device” on the homepage. After that the tools open and run with no connection, because your files were never going anywhere. Two things need the internet once: reading text from scans downloads its language files the first time you use it, and a new version of Merji can only arrive while you are online.
How do I install it on my phone?
Merji can be added to your home screen so it opens like an app. On Android in Chrome, open the menu and choose “Add to Home screen” or “Install app”. On an iPhone in Safari, tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”. There is nothing to download from an app store.
Does it work on iPhone and Android? Which browsers?
Yes, on phones and computers. Use a recent version of Chrome, Safari or Edge. Voice commands are the one exception: the microphone button only appears in browsers that can recognise speech on the device itself, which no iPhone browser can do yet. There you can use your keyboard's own dictation instead.
Files and limits
What's the largest file I can use?
50 MB per file, up to 200 pages in a PDF, up to 50 files at once, and 250 MB for one job in total. The limits are there so a phone doesn't run out of memory part-way through.
Which file types does it accept?
PDF, JPG, PNG and WebP. HEIC, the format iPhones use for photos, isn't supported yet: share the photo as a JPG first.
Why did Merji give me my original file back after compressing?
Because the compressed version wasn't smaller. Some files are already as small as they go, and squeezing them again would make them bigger, so Merji hands back your original and says so rather than calling it a success. If you asked for a size limit and the file is still over it, Merji tells you that too, and suggests a lower quality or splitting the file.
Can it read scanned pages? In which languages?
Yes. OCR makes scans searchable in English, Hindi and Marathi. Clear, straight, printed pages read well; blurry photos, handwriting and stamps read worse, so check names and numbers before you rely on them.
Can I type what I want in Hindi or Hinglish?
Yes. The command bar understands plain English and common Hinglish phrasing, for example “merge karke 200kb kar do”. It shows you its plan before anything runs.
Forms and exam uploads
My exam photo was rejected. What do I check?
Compare your file with the rules in the official notification, in this order: the size in KB (many forms set a minimum as well as a maximum), the width and height in pixels, the format (usually JPG), and whether the photo and signature went into the right slots. Exam photo resizer sets size and KB together. If the portal showed an error message, paste it into Fix for a portal, which reads the rule and fits your file to it. Merji can match the published numbers; it can't promise a portal will accept the file.
A portal says my PDF is too big. What's the quickest fix?
Open Compress PDF, choose “Fit a size limit” and enter the limit, for example 200 KB. If the file can't get under it, Merji says so plainly instead of handing you a file that will be rejected again.
